The weight of the head allows me to strip off wood like a hot knife through butter and the double bevel lets me carve concave's much easier than my single bevel gransfors. Even the beard of the axe looks stunning when in use, but the only issue I had with the axe was the handle. When it was supplied the handle was a tad too long though this was so I could cut the handle to the length I wanted. When this was done I found the handle was too slim for my hands which meant I had to grip harder, and having gotten used to that I felt that all was well. But over time I have been wanting to get a new handle to make it mor comfortable and personal for myself.<br />

I nice piece of ash carved with axe and knife to the shape and size I like. I chose a straight handle as that is more befitting of a medieval axe. Very few illustrations if any show curved handles for axes (shown below). But also because I felt the straight design would contrast nicely with the curved blade. the blade is kinking slightly to the left but that is fine for a left hander like myself.<br />

Have more light in the mornings and evening has thins a much more pleasurable experience as trying to carve in the dark is almost impossible (not to mention dangerous). So I have been going through some birch that I acquired from a nature park near my dads which is a lovely material to carve, its soft nature when green makes it easy work with an axe and knife but as it seasons it becomes lovely and hard to take a nice polished finish from the tool.<br />

As much as I do like my porcelain bowls, being that I can stick them in the microwave and cook stuff instantly, I find it detracts from the joy off eating from my own homemade wooden bowls. My breakfast bowl is nice to eat from as it has aged nicely and everyday I use it, it brings back memories of making it and the journey it has taken. So having made some wooden bowls I wanted to make some pieces to cook with.<br />
<br />
To that end I have made a nice little trough and serving spoon out of some rippled willow. Was an absolute bugger to carve due to the rippling wanting to break off and do its own thing. But they came out rather nice after a little perseverance and oiling. The trough will be a wonderful addition to serve food or to make dough in for bread as it follows the traditional pattern which is somehow find very pleasing. Whether it is its symmetry or its functionality I don't know but it just seems so nice.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
nice thinned core. this shot shows how fine the shavings are on the bowl. not the fast turned clean marks that medieval turners made but still very good.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
having used the lathe for the first time its work perfectly well and has enough weight to handle turning bowls but not too heavy not to transport. Really want to show the lathe to sherwood forest who gave me the oak to make the bed and legs. I may have to turn them something nice in return to thank them.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But also having thought about re-enacment this year i felt it time to make some tool sheathes so i can stop hiding away tools from the public. I have to say over the past couple of years doing woodworking displays in front of public, they can easily spot out modern items very well. the amount of times people have noticed the "Made in sweden" mark on my gransfors axe has annoyed me so much. so for authentic tools they need authentic sheaths.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1C0CsPytt4ABMDQICUZ2y448GRHHE-d0uipPTKB2cjPirf2-ARPuug4QPA4UHYfYZsbeZciGNhDJkGg69BI19r2D5ajgkT3rTt7XzHEGO_UQuV8miBLMwnDI7gILg3m06f_qcoaMwk2M/s1600/IMG_0282.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1C0CsPytt4ABMDQICUZ2y448GRHHE-d0uipPTKB2cjPirf2-ARPuug4QPA4UHYfYZsbeZciGNhDJkGg69BI19r2D5ajgkT3rTt7XzHEGO_UQuV8miBLMwnDI7gILg3m06f_qcoaMwk2M/s320/IMG_0282.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The axe, adze, and gouge simply have folded leather cover that was shaped to follow the form of the blades. Whereas the knife require a little more precision by mark the sheath fit it perfectly. After looking through archaeology books with surviving sheaths i decided to follow this <a href="http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?22249-Scandi-Sheaths-My-Way" target="_blank">article</a> for a scandi sheath as the result were virtually the same as the originals (though the suspension strap isn't).</div>

<br />
<b><u>Step One: Prepare the Metal Centres</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b><u>Step Four: Treadle, Pole, and Done!!!</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The lasts step for the lathe are to source a decent sized pole, some wood for an A-frame, and the treadle. When you have sourced all of this the last thing to do is tweak it all until you are happy with it and test the lathe out. I tested out a piece of sycamore to see how the lathe performed and I am pleased with the results.</div>

After Christmas and the recent weather I have been tinkering with my oak bed to make it fit for purpose.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Step 1 fitting the legs to the bed</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx1opVj6gv1Jc_vnCRDAz3ERVyMvWsCfd84aQdW7J6UWWbeWt_nsBkIpTswm5KeH-rSlwljw9C2gpUv70-lcMoERSxNSwsvfhDCHDPxwfePkeQ9zH0U76i2c012SYNwNOj2zp8JxHTd6U/s1600/IMG_1758.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx1opVj6gv1Jc_vnCRDAz3ERVyMvWsCfd84aQdW7J6UWWbeWt_nsBkIpTswm5KeH-rSlwljw9C2gpUv70-lcMoERSxNSwsvfhDCHDPxwfePkeQ9zH0U76i2c012SYNwNOj2zp8JxHTd6U/s400/IMG_1758.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Axe the legs to fit the holes in the bed. The legs didn't sit flush initially but I just trimmed them until they were fairly level and just above my hips.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrELsDbe6ayQDo6tMnpdk5j0e-boB9xKJ_2haEPOc3dQPq0DvyXpGbzca1nqnK5ijzjDMoaceUXlmsOwKQtCOOnL4QAty3FfWPN5KW1JIl4E2I-nWU6-tPPz675UMvhiPEwU6zAO1ClfQ/s1600/IMG_1763.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrELsDbe6ayQDo6tMnpdk5j0e-boB9xKJ_2haEPOc3dQPq0DvyXpGbzca1nqnK5ijzjDMoaceUXlmsOwKQtCOOnL4QAty3FfWPN5KW1JIl4E2I-nWU6-tPPz675UMvhiPEwU6zAO1ClfQ/s400/IMG_1763.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once level, test the bed to make sure it handle any extra weight. I tested it by sitting on bed to support my whole body weight. This is done because the lathe will take many forces when uneven bowl blanks spin.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<b><u>Step 2 Mark up the legs</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUl_Ir6P6N01VbWIh5fgzTiY1UaIYIPuudcuHOTnuvAfdri0PaDWjKfcBkHNdFqJvNnbD-dO04ZO-RKSRvit45i4GqpqV6omvX7dTE5w6xy9sofQ8HuD9HsQCGFuP2SdLktDMpHHkB5r4/s1600/IMG_1761.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUl_Ir6P6N01VbWIh5fgzTiY1UaIYIPuudcuHOTnuvAfdri0PaDWjKfcBkHNdFqJvNnbD-dO04ZO-RKSRvit45i4GqpqV6omvX7dTE5w6xy9sofQ8HuD9HsQCGFuP2SdLktDMpHHkB5r4/s400/IMG_1761.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These markings make it easier to line up the legs to get the same fit and height. Numbering the legs to the holes also works very well.</div>
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<b><u>Step 3 Create the poppets</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1AQzW2MXvfTQ-dmy8lfKsb2yVOciIJNtqtXnhRm1LJaROjIohV1g_2ZptBoJpjsMEBYyZTIA0-GZZFpdyIkCRpsVf-90QQUkac-59R8XrJwukqFAJJJKwJq91tI1GEATTC4wYGKuDqvI/s1600/IMG_1764.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1AQzW2MXvfTQ-dmy8lfKsb2yVOciIJNtqtXnhRm1LJaROjIohV1g_2ZptBoJpjsMEBYyZTIA0-GZZFpdyIkCRpsVf-90QQUkac-59R8XrJwukqFAJJJKwJq91tI1GEATTC4wYGKuDqvI/s400/IMG_1764.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Select a suitable piece of wood. preferably straight grained.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5TF2CrMDNUXOkMCuqQh6Dzu5WYYCQvJG6P4NxZ2qtXqmhk9rAN5ZeHmV-ZU6T5qwGOWyM3QL5Xt73Tx7xLTL-DOgSfgcvT3gWw14oOrY9z7S38DhR15f-z-ky_d-m2xv13fpIpFXe5iI/s1600/IMG_1765.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5TF2CrMDNUXOkMCuqQh6Dzu5WYYCQvJG6P4NxZ2qtXqmhk9rAN5ZeHmV-ZU6T5qwGOWyM3QL5Xt73Tx7xLTL-DOgSfgcvT3gWw14oOrY9z7S38DhR15f-z-ky_d-m2xv13fpIpFXe5iI/s400/IMG_1765.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Saw the piece to length. Remember to leave a little extra length just incase.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"you can take more off, but you can't put it back on"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaiF4V2_bGsGmLIDoIMnY0Yrv3J2gXMrlMcM2JOlIHkUKp8LJ-IyRVCDVCPpfmNGjJSMxo9FLUorpFo2YeXdNoeb17DYOP8KRCCO41ZR2bHVnvu2OwoyfZCqCOHlaQBaspxNhvfDxCGq4/s1600/IMG_1767.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaiF4V2_bGsGmLIDoIMnY0Yrv3J2gXMrlMcM2JOlIHkUKp8LJ-IyRVCDVCPpfmNGjJSMxo9FLUorpFo2YeXdNoeb17DYOP8KRCCO41ZR2bHVnvu2OwoyfZCqCOHlaQBaspxNhvfDxCGq4/s400/IMG_1767.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next mark up and cut the tenon to fit through the slot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And repeat to create the second poppet</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj57NZ9YoUH0qb_aU2dnOUZt2gWsWNZkWV2ajouFVTZopfUOHlL25eWoqdXi5wbiLggKxZis4NyonwbAaGAZPttnNMkz2nvNvOSrqj2DbwmfOA8aicZJTUcxQrZeEUfsu9xH65V5CAyya0/s1600/IMG_1768.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj57NZ9YoUH0qb_aU2dnOUZt2gWsWNZkWV2ajouFVTZopfUOHlL25eWoqdXi5wbiLggKxZis4NyonwbAaGAZPttnNMkz2nvNvOSrqj2DbwmfOA8aicZJTUcxQrZeEUfsu9xH65V5CAyya0/s400/IMG_1768.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next couple of stages will be sourcing the metal centres for the poppets though these may require an entire post focused on them alone. Then the tool rest set up will follow afterwards.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hopefully my next posts will become more regular showing more update as I go.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again any questions please feel free to ask.</div>

<a name='more'></a>Since my turnings a Sherwood Forest I have been thinking a lot about turning bowls. Realising that wanting to turn more I need a pole lathe for where I live at the moment. So I went back to Sherwood Forest to ask for some oak big enough to make a pole lathe. I was extremely lucky to find a piece big enough and get it back to mine. But instead of just making it I thought I might take a few snaps to show its construction, and help any other people who want to build there own.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Step one: splitting</b></u><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizuNTfUlJ6YB_iQhZf94fJ5VskUZsGmuerwUAYhD2oWBoRM3_sN9Ai37o3mUVJ5jPJuZVwUonFRSkFoqQHiirxcGsjQnuvQmVrEN9PXU5lYUS9LMiV3QumKSzajzwraf6qDUN50yJ_wOY/s640/blogger-image-1398566258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizuNTfUlJ6YB_iQhZf94fJ5VskUZsGmuerwUAYhD2oWBoRM3_sN9Ai37o3mUVJ5jPJuZVwUonFRSkFoqQHiirxcGsjQnuvQmVrEN9PXU5lYUS9LMiV3QumKSzajzwraf6qDUN50yJ_wOY/s640/blogger-image-1398566258.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First split the log into two halves with an axe and wedges.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvxX08Ej-1iZNnXd98QexadBF4CGP0wy-H8rQnAr-m3yBfRX8pOiLDsPaC6Krl0bkrLf-p7z0REysjrImS6L_tucE71-8e8qZfvsGOJdhX-ZvamxcYXB2tMidX66Tjt1zbVM7CPPTwTsw/s640/blogger-image-1622647329.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvxX08Ej-1iZNnXd98QexadBF4CGP0wy-H8rQnAr-m3yBfRX8pOiLDsPaC6Krl0bkrLf-p7z0REysjrImS6L_tucE71-8e8qZfvsGOJdhX-ZvamxcYXB2tMidX66Tjt1zbVM7CPPTwTsw/s640/blogger-image-1622647329.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used only one axe and 3 wedges to split the oak and it cleaved rather straight.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk1_nGzIKl6G-QN0Aa78loPL5KccFEpVxGy0ax334SlRAItzApKv_ao_dimWW7YyL6570nV_prU2NC3cVRFoMy03R93YyiHSDQNIHWC5A1Yiz5sKRateZApqAPMAtI5fIVaqkt76rmF_g/s640/blogger-image--704464359.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk1_nGzIKl6G-QN0Aa78loPL5KccFEpVxGy0ax334SlRAItzApKv_ao_dimWW7YyL6570nV_prU2NC3cVRFoMy03R93YyiHSDQNIHWC5A1Yiz5sKRateZApqAPMAtI5fIVaqkt76rmF_g/s640/blogger-image--704464359.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once done decide which will be the bed and legs, then take the legs half and split that into four even lengths.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaka6RV7DfRiMairMpegVqR0qrbLWKJuayIw9AITNKkNZ6LekrYx5WBsGR6tQ7_2WJR7Wh_xztyuXHgK5v97q_KvFMN4cEVPLjVVh_mkfwafssWlLntqbvcfyIUp4gBVSlQf_RnBELkJw/s640/blogger-image--787948589.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaka6RV7DfRiMairMpegVqR0qrbLWKJuayIw9AITNKkNZ6LekrYx5WBsGR6tQ7_2WJR7Wh_xztyuXHgK5v97q_KvFMN4cEVPLjVVh_mkfwafssWlLntqbvcfyIUp4gBVSlQf_RnBELkJw/s640/blogger-image--787948589.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeOem-3GYWCg5gsWFSLao7T3qkR_ScwcfGZ-Swc5jPzX0iDD7kXcUCerrhyzCJ247G9fhvDg0S-IlDAVuHxzv4tHepudXt3CrdSquEpsZAsFKDD-mgXv1x1t_mjYtpNc-V_zwldvNFdY4/s640/blogger-image-1819524442.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeOem-3GYWCg5gsWFSLao7T3qkR_ScwcfGZ-Swc5jPzX0iDD7kXcUCerrhyzCJ247G9fhvDg0S-IlDAVuHxzv4tHepudXt3CrdSquEpsZAsFKDD-mgXv1x1t_mjYtpNc-V_zwldvNFdY4/s640/blogger-image-1819524442.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All lovely and straight.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<b><u>Step two: prepare the bed</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid-OelUB7UZ_GTAcNiPJDIvP-ron47GZM9eN3UhsmgOo9rH70aL2-YGY4YgIFLIvoYQV964WDGT0-H6GfV6-MBgHxuW20LoH0-oYj0L930vbx5DQwpL041lPds5XypASLLfI3E4hLEIzs/s640/blogger-image--2052810028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid-OelUB7UZ_GTAcNiPJDIvP-ron47GZM9eN3UhsmgOo9rH70aL2-YGY4YgIFLIvoYQV964WDGT0-H6GfV6-MBgHxuW20LoH0-oYj0L930vbx5DQwpL041lPds5XypASLLfI3E4hLEIzs/s640/blogger-image--2052810028.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Flatten off the bed with an axe and then mark up the slot. You can make the bed smoother with a spoke shave.</div>
<br />
<br />
<u><b>Step three: cutting the slot</b></u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieTZ6knnnsejdmPi1nipZ4whwCL7jqYCl9vlBBDgVg7RZmoEFGPM2Nb_5YxlM9_Qd8G8a3-AcXOU9y3nLOEcPgTnCw-HzT1bh1KVv-2sWHW-V9jxyeL1Nk0qk7TPBdGYD_syWEPugFfnU/s640/blogger-image-1857479113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieTZ6knnnsejdmPi1nipZ4whwCL7jqYCl9vlBBDgVg7RZmoEFGPM2Nb_5YxlM9_Qd8G8a3-AcXOU9y3nLOEcPgTnCw-HzT1bh1KVv-2sWHW-V9jxyeL1Nk0qk7TPBdGYD_syWEPugFfnU/s640/blogger-image-1857479113.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Drill some holes with enough length to insert a saw. Then saw down the slot keeping it as straight as possible. Then remove the bark from the other side and drill some holes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

So far this is how far I have gotten. Now need to make the legs fit and test how it stands, then measure it against myself. If anyone has any questions or wants to ask me anything just leave a comment on this blog.<br />

I have to say its been a fantastic event! have had ago at firing a replica 15th century canon, having a few fights throughout the day, and making some pole lathed bowls for some re-enacters. I was able to make 4 bowls over the 2 days, i would have had 5 but one sadly split whilst trying to snap the core off.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
the top two were made out of sycamore which was rather dry but gave a superb finish and the bottom two are made out of some birch local to sherwood forest. The birch was very green a cut like a dream and was lucky enough to take a little bit of the birch home to make some more bowls (and maybe some spoons).</div>

But the bowls turned out great!!! and i was able to give one of them to a friend who works at skidby mill.<br />

<br />
As people we all use utensils too cook and eat with. Many of these could made of stainless steel, wood, or plastic. Stainless steel tends to have nice polish on it and as the name states doesn't stain that much so a spoon made of that will look brand new in 10 years time. Plastic reacts the same but over time may just lose its shine a little.<br />
<br />
Wood on the other hand I find tends to tell a story of its life. When I was cleaning a cooking and eating spoon today they looked very different since they were made. The eater is made out of maple 2 years ago and has since them dulled to a nice brown, also has been chipped on the handle. The cooking spoons bowl has turned yellow after making some carrot coriander soup and the back of the handle has some small burns from being left on the edge of the pan. They both tell a story of being used and age nicely giving both a distinct character (one that can't be reproduced). And they will continue to gain character for the rest of their working lives.<br />
<br />
Also last week I sent a spoon to a friend in Colombia for her birthday. I wonder what that spoon will look like after a few years of use over there. One thing is true, that it will be a well travelled spoon.<br />

Spent Sunday doing some re-enactment with the <a href="http://www.savilehousehold.co.uk/">Savilles Household</a> at croft castle near wale and I was lucky enough to do some bowl turning on my pole lathe whilst I was there (thanks to gary ball for bringing some poles). Was a fantastic venue and a fun day out with lots of public who were very interested in the pole lathe and how bowls were made.<br />
<br />
I was only able to produce two bowls out of sycamore as I had to keep stopping and starting throughout the day. But was great to see adults and children who were interested in medieval bowls and medieval history.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Can't wait to do more turning next year with the society and maybe a few more crafts such as spoon carving and bowl carving. </div>

Having done little bits to it over the past month or so decided to finish the entire thing in a day, plus having some new spokeshaves was time to test them out aswell.<br />
<br />
After having the two side pieces cut out I marked up the tenons the drilled them out. I got a length of hazel and cut the joints in them and carved the to fit with a knife. Then mocked it up all together with some modern screws to see how it fitted and make adjustments accordingly. the overall fit was good and was able to test it out on a piece of hazel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4452KXCiSDAs-gIf_t52UuG_rxq5eUUp8EacT94OKIr0qlvmVESDxWt4CVZOivaNo21WGMUuexrDwyYLID76fp-jIhomCMvRtmBxDW2miyCZQ5p2DwXFfj5_QmNJYcNj2hBE24Q6HCZE/s1600/IMG_1291.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4452KXCiSDAs-gIf_t52UuG_rxq5eUUp8EacT94OKIr0qlvmVESDxWt4CVZOivaNo21WGMUuexrDwyYLID76fp-jIhomCMvRtmBxDW2miyCZQ5p2DwXFfj5_QmNJYcNj2hBE24Q6HCZE/s320/IMG_1291.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After the test I took the saw apart and used my spokeshave to round off the side pieces so the were nicer to handle and more pleasing to the eye. To do this I tried a similar technique as the pullstroke in spoon carving. Placing the side piece on my sternum and on my leg I was able to use the spokeshave without a vice which was nice. Also was nice to sit outside in the nice weather carving :-)<br />

after doing the side pieces i did a bit of work on the middle piece and then reassembled the saw using some twine in stead of linen and if worked a treat. the final bowsaw. Gonna be awesome to use it at medieval shows in the future, plus the whole thing only cost me £2.50 aswell. Bargain, Beautiful and it works.</div>

<br />
I turned up on the wednesday and pitched my tent and spent first couple hours sharpening my axe since I had a couple hours to kill. We started by selecting and splitting some willow into sizeable pieces for the bowl mate and removing the bark so we could draw the design.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh10qbOMDQynzHGvERw-1BECwB6KJbPwqdYYLj4OAd0sKj-DyOAN165mm65bsDeGjkotCTPI024AyzoDTBH7UfgdMXZkK0qGQHjRuSEZRZym8S66Ajpsij02e-bpwJLtSOlbEr_hA_O-pw/s1600/IMG_2895.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh10qbOMDQynzHGvERw-1BECwB6KJbPwqdYYLj4OAd0sKj-DyOAN165mm65bsDeGjkotCTPI024AyzoDTBH7UfgdMXZkK0qGQHjRuSEZRZym8S66Ajpsij02e-bpwJLtSOlbEr_hA_O-pw/s320/IMG_2895.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy5E-fi-OlwfGAFiyGqYX7YP1S5ck_NfQHxIZhG6eQMau3dhaOdjQKQHnByfrruyq6GMzAr4v8dUMe_RBVZgqjnq1WsNT7-jLT7BxzOW9cEGLuUWaRueAkSUVI8824iVCdbUlPuBVSE5Y/s1600/IMG_2897.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy5E-fi-OlwfGAFiyGqYX7YP1S5ck_NfQHxIZhG6eQMau3dhaOdjQKQHnByfrruyq6GMzAr4v8dUMe_RBVZgqjnq1WsNT7-jLT7BxzOW9cEGLuUWaRueAkSUVI8824iVCdbUlPuBVSE5Y/s320/IMG_2897.JPG" style="cursor: move;" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The first tool we had to use was an adze which was to carve out the inside of the bowl and was actually a lot easier to use than I thought. first came the big roughing cuts to remove as much mass as quickly as possible and then came the more gentle smoothing cuts. After getting to grips with the adze the results showed<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the the adze came the the gouges and hook tools to smooth off all the cuts and make it nice.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then came the axe to remove the waste wood to give shape to the ends.</div>

and finally finishing of the outside with a push knife and a spokeshave to give its final shape. The push knife was a fun tool, like a drawknife but the opposite. The finished bowl is at the bottom.</div>

Luckily there are lots of articles online about how to do this. Most just suggest using charcoal or lamp black to make the wax black, so I ground up some charcoal into powder because it was ready available. <br />

It felt almost like some form of alchemy waiting for the black colour to show. After a couple of tests, this was the result (compared to the original colour).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
When the wax was ready then came the time to pour. Now this was the interesting bit. Had to be very quick as the wax dries very quickly so to get an even surface and get the wax into the corners. But after three attempts at pouring and scraping out, i finally got the wax into the corners and an even-ish surface!<br />

Not that I'm getting tired of spoons, just that I would like to try something I haven't made before.<br />
<br />
The events at tamworth castle and bolsover castle have highlighted the fact that I do not have an authentic bow to saw up wood and spoon blanks. Instead I have been using a bacho laplander folding saw which is less than authentic and is a pain to keep hiding all the time. So I have decided to build a bow saw myself. So far I only have the two side frames of the saw.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS-fR7SsUqR79OjGzVGUwdp-c9zY5yp-3BfkydlqCTrsMVgGtFCEd9pVxrxK95T2rHqJAjE32Ylpv-prrPwJw2bVgpTVNaH59aMNGfGOz952m6BlMC-ye6epyhL75R4_Nb_j6BDBVNB8E/s1600/IMG_0699.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS-fR7SsUqR79OjGzVGUwdp-c9zY5yp-3BfkydlqCTrsMVgGtFCEd9pVxrxK95T2rHqJAjE32Ylpv-prrPwJw2bVgpTVNaH59aMNGfGOz952m6BlMC-ye6epyhL75R4_Nb_j6BDBVNB8E/s320/IMG_0699.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Also while at my event at bolsover castle I found some lovely straight grained ash in the fire wood pile. Not being one to waste good wood I split a piece into planks and one of the planks I made into a wax tablet. This was just for a bit of fun and it turned to be very interesting subject to research. Having had a look online there are some wax tablets that survive in Poland (see second image) which are like books in that they have a front cover and back cover and the tablets in-between have both side with wax on them.<br />

The tablets have the town archives of Torun written on them, and looking at how many survive there must have been many more to accompany them. Imagine making those tablets constantly. Fingers crossed I get some time to attempt a few more in the future.<br />
<br />
the final project i have been working on has been turning a ball on my pole lathe. the ball is going to be used for games of bandy ball at re-enactment events with the <a href="http://www.savilehousehold.co.uk/">Savilles re-enactment group</a>. I have to say trying to turn the perfect sphere on my pole lathe for the first time is not easy. you look at it and think one side is too lumpy, there too short, or even to pointed so you are forever trying to perfect it. but here are some of the photos through the stages of production.<br />

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">this past week I have been on holiday in holland with my girlfriend and whilst visiting there were some lovely historical museums that we visited, with some wood work related history.</span></div>
<div style="font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: black; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;">the first museum we visited was called <a href="http://www.archeon.nl/">Archeon</a> located near </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Alphen aan den Rijn, Though calling it a museum is an understatement. It focuses on living history re-enactors recreating the living conditions of High Medieval, Roman, Iron Age, Bronze age, Neolithic, and further back. While all these areas were interesting with roman massages, neolithic bread on a stick, and medieval seal making the area that interested me the most was the bronze age. The re-enactor in that area had a wonderful collection of bronze axes in that just seemed too amazing not to look at. She asked me and the public to setup the axes in he chronological order, which i had correct. The two on the left being the earlier as they would work but the handles would eventually split. The two in the center were later and better designed to incorporate the strength of tree branches and having the axe head slotting into the head. This design must have given better results with fewer broken handles but again the wood would most likely spilt eventually. the axe on the far right was the latest design for bronze axes which incorporated the bronze head with a socket for the handle to attach too. This design would have been given the best longevity to the bronze axe and this design was even incorporated into the early iron axes of the iron age.</span></div>

Since then i have been holding onto the axe head with the hope of making a new handle at some point, but i felt very content with my left handed Gransfors Bruks carving axe so I left it. When my girlfriend came round to my place and wanted to do some spoon carving she had to use my left handed axe even though she was right handed. To that end I have been working on a new handle, taking my time to make sure the wood dry's properly. here is the new handle with the wedge hammered in.

Apart from that I have been working on a couple spoons over my days off. these three have been made out of some sycamore and I decided to have a play with decorating the handles, or as a work colleague calls it "jazzing it up". Its interesting to decide what decoration you want so far in the design and that one has to be so careful with the axing so as not to ruin the design. But then again there are so many different methods of decoration that one can blag it a little. But out of the three I like the handle with the dot on the top, somehow it just compliments the teardrop bowl so well and gives the spoon its character. Though this is just my opinion, what do other people think? Perhaps I should be looking at making more teardrop shaped spoons with other designs just to get a feel.

With my last post being from last year alot has changed since then. I have finished my medieval pole lathe and have been turning at events. Also I have moved to Sheffield which means I will have to find a workshop for my lathe an tools.<br />
<br />
But until then I will be carrying with the spoon carving to keep my wood cravings happy. Here is some of the work I have done last night, working on a ladle out of some beech and some eating spoons out of sycamore.<br />
<br />
Over the next couple of weeks/months I will be posting more :-)<br />

I have been in talks with Peter Wood from Greenwood Days about volunteering on his courses. Greenwood Days is where I first learnt about green wood working about 3 years ago so it was wonderful to see the place again after all this time.<br /><br />The workshop is based in a lovely woodland which is brilliant to work in as it gives one a sense of tranquillity whilst you work. Also it allows Peter to show people what to look for in a tree for wood working. But it was wonderful to work there in the outdoors and not having to worry about making “too” much mess.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2CO311syJ6Lewejmb03f2eOnBNiB6ffyFq3GM4kVFh8BfE3Yd7iXCR12pjsJIWRCCCaDwHKhklNHMybJ_2j11Jn76UC3iotJF4fA6f5gPivKxUhDItRwsvOsZTrKoxUq5i4gcjfJjGa4/s1600/IMG_0962.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2CO311syJ6Lewejmb03f2eOnBNiB6ffyFq3GM4kVFh8BfE3Yd7iXCR12pjsJIWRCCCaDwHKhklNHMybJ_2j11Jn76UC3iotJF4fA6f5gPivKxUhDItRwsvOsZTrKoxUq5i4gcjfJjGa4/s400/IMG_0962.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613332053488971538" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHmaTxPPIhqkLxCggC24Q75KQduGhewxtDoDqxIFDSGTM46XiGV4ZIiUsR5WUZ_4R4i4OQWMMbbfi_gA4Yxlh7SyCLx_OBNwDYQC8IpMjcr7_tym0UcrfShvTXX_b_R5l3Ur2vzgYUhhE/s1600/IMG_0966.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHmaTxPPIhqkLxCggC24Q75KQduGhewxtDoDqxIFDSGTM46XiGV4ZIiUsR5WUZ_4R4i4OQWMMbbfi_gA4Yxlh7SyCLx_OBNwDYQC8IpMjcr7_tym0UcrfShvTXX_b_R5l3Ur2vzgYUhhE/s400/IMG_0966.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613334205820358850" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZx-nis403mt00_t3vVolY3ExH1QasJ2kZ8ApWocI4zf2BGGut_1SwH6naBzC8YkktEPg7uKv0EwvI3_96BM0EGJh7F-HpAL0eob7KCbXmN2xETggzKhUFHLKVfZkqAlHlfb7ZUsGBWEM/s1600/IMG_0969.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZx-nis403mt00_t3vVolY3ExH1QasJ2kZ8ApWocI4zf2BGGut_1SwH6naBzC8YkktEPg7uKv0EwvI3_96BM0EGJh7F-HpAL0eob7KCbXmN2xETggzKhUFHLKVfZkqAlHlfb7ZUsGBWEM/s400/IMG_0969.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613334934315056930" /></a><br />But we worked on creating a bodgers muddle out of some ash which after two attempts did get better, couldn’t quite get it working properly. <br />
My last post being about reproduction I thought it about time I show the results of my attempted reproductions on my blog.<br />
<br />
Uni work is getting hectic at moment meaning less time to do other things…..like carving sadly. Luckily though, over the past week I found a few hours here and there to finish up some of the rough carved eating spoon blanks. Have tried my best to replicate my original maple eating spoon on the far right. The two on the left being the replicas again made out of maple. The shapes of the bowl are similar enough but the far left one being slightly more rounded and less elongated than the other two. Also notable are the variation in handles, which although not great in terms or reproduction, it does give a nice aesthetic when comparing them.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJCpvKe7PIOGQKxSnmsingRYq9ldlUDKmabVpgRLxI82up4vJfZt7LZwrn2AxJbEbG_ZVElp1K_8m6Lhhkc77sFDz_zXiDiA-HJ3AmuVmaNdnxajOokH59XTuMDgIyNPUdXs7wyfb95IQ/s1600/IMG_0781.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJCpvKe7PIOGQKxSnmsingRYq9ldlUDKmabVpgRLxI82up4vJfZt7LZwrn2AxJbEbG_ZVElp1K_8m6Lhhkc77sFDz_zXiDiA-HJ3AmuVmaNdnxajOokH59XTuMDgIyNPUdXs7wyfb95IQ/s400/IMG_0781.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590718530513011106" /></a><br />
Either way it is a good feeling to be able to reproduce a spoon style and see the results. Cannot quite describe it fully but it is a nice feeling.Rob. Nhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12965717897131539294noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-973289540163481352.post-34870391911976170372011-03-13T00:44:00.000-08:002011-03-13T01:03:23.459-08:00The Art of "Reproduction"This week I have been having a go doing some spoons in a different style from my usual ones. Mainly because I fancy exploring the different bowl shapes for a spoon and also because I have never done rounded spoon bowls. These may look simple but do require a slightly different approach when carving, the most important being to get the end bowl perfectly round and not ending up with a triangle or making look like a hexagon.<br /><br />But whilst doing the style it gave me the idea of trying to reproduce it. Creating something bespoke (in spoon carving anyway) is quite easy in that each spoon will be different, possibly because each piece of wood will work in a different way facilitating in a change in design or just because you make a mistake and you have change the design to amend the mistake. But to reproduce the same style requires that you take some control of your wood/material. Not complete control but enough to make you consider “which way do I want the grain to run for this exact cut”. Reproducing will also test your carving skills, how closely you can follow plans, how mistake free you technique is, and most important of all your discipline as this becomes less about being free an easy and more about focusing on the tiny little aesthetics.<br /><br />Any way I have waffled on about reproduction, here is a finished spoon on the left and its ROUGH reproduction on the right, both made out of maple. So far so good but the rough one is slightly larger at the moment and just need to be refined once it’s a little drier, and assuming/hoping that I make no mistakes it should be a good reproduction. Hopefully the 3rd one will be a little easier.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6aF7-8DXlWDxKVd7c78crVX1DO0OBSWzJGsn0z2pUJT4og-JnNCv18teG0iUlWlLjR4olRNf9TQtFQTpezwFdjAjtKB9d1uRVWYwsaGYIMBQ6W-0jKzRMcs1YJOhXWxejyP0e3p4c0I/s1600/IMG_0622.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6aF7-8DXlWDxKVd7c78crVX1DO0OBSWzJGsn0z2pUJT4og-JnNCv18teG0iUlWlLjR4olRNf9TQtFQTpezwFdjAjtKB9d1uRVWYwsaGYIMBQ6W-0jKzRMcs1YJOhXWxejyP0e3p4c0I/s400/IMG_0622.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583483501041544050" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmPlPpqU0VWjgmZr3lwpRWO0r5nCADJWQ0WpRfKJiJ650evVfWb1jYZbrozR5PiCmVsBLruyNgsQlBLE5ycPuHwISDSJ8QV8Ss6w6sANonpl0e1Rd9DYAvcFmpDAM3p89DEkqOHiyrD7s/s1600/IMG_0621.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmPlPpqU0VWjgmZr3lwpRWO0r5nCADJWQ0WpRfKJiJ650evVfWb1jYZbrozR5PiCmVsBLruyNgsQlBLE5ycPuHwISDSJ8QV8Ss6w6sANonpl0e1Rd9DYAvcFmpDAM3p89DEkqOHiyrD7s/s400/IMG_0621.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583484108782696370" /></a><br />In an <a href="http://robswoodwork.blogspot.com/2011/02/spoon-crook-hunting.html">earlier blog </a>I mentioned gathering spoon crooks from Peterborough. Have been slowly working with one of the crooks to create a ladle and this is the fruits of my labour. This is the first time I’ve done one since <a href="http://robswoodwork.blogspot.com/2010/06/advanced-spoon-carving-course.html">robin’s course </a>last year and it is a little thin in place’s but should work really well in its function.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_j5KsPYsUHdaaLoXEgOtiTxPeVpOnwTQFdsC15nSJsXct48qezLzf2wK_cdY74-RBsOTCLG07FafsDtLJwc_O2pQJLXzBw9I0av8CP2hkLItVBSL9-UnTnDVJM9HqcBP3Y2yTcH9vl2Q/s1600/IMG_0624.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_j5KsPYsUHdaaLoXEgOtiTxPeVpOnwTQFdsC15nSJsXct48qezLzf2wK_cdY74-RBsOTCLG07FafsDtLJwc_O2pQJLXzBw9I0av8CP2hkLItVBSL9-UnTnDVJM9HqcBP3Y2yTcH9vl2Q/s400/IMG_0624.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583484671565836866" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi20TWaNiuU1DiMwE-2BuVuBoSKBskaCmFocihzlWKjw47XDGvJTbV0Su0cCSUVCase7pCEcVKByhEJgNmKbiUL825A9sgD9TjnU8WtYIuveH8jRTbYX_DajkETAFUcSPAQ0WieaMwS2ro/s1600/IMG_0626.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi20TWaNiuU1DiMwE-2BuVuBoSKBskaCmFocihzlWKjw47XDGvJTbV0Su0cCSUVCase7pCEcVKByhEJgNmKbiUL825A9sgD9TjnU8WtYIuveH8jRTbYX_DajkETAFUcSPAQ0WieaMwS2ro/s400/IMG_0626.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583485271222229650" /></a><br />Also roughed out another possible ladle out of another crook. Remember when I mentioned about changing design due to your wood/material well this is a prime example. The crook bends to the left making it more suitable for a left handed user (which I am!). Whilst there I went to the local woodland park close to his house to go search for any wood that had been recently felled. Whilst doing this I thought it would be worth looking for some crooks to make some nicely cranked spoons from. There wasn’t a great choice of species as willow was the only thing that was felled at the time, but beggars can’t be choosers. It will make some excellent general cooking spoons, plus will be nice to practice for when I get denser/harder crooked woods.<br /><br />Some of the crooks I was able to find:<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTHzpojR_yhH8kinPJpPo1Rfy4uHfC9ItARKE57wQvWjH4-pvjxo8y-Pya_NlAhjx3vGTkxVah3fgWNaDySM_ORB0DhnTjS7MN1byVyN6mkdo-YozJCL9cdKrse3mZyukZEzmDkQr_Oo/s1600/IMG_0404.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTHzpojR_yhH8kinPJpPo1Rfy4uHfC9ItARKE57wQvWjH4-pvjxo8y-Pya_NlAhjx3vGTkxVah3fgWNaDySM_ORB0DhnTjS7MN1byVyN6mkdo-YozJCL9cdKrse3mZyukZEzmDkQr_Oo/s400/IMG_0404.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578869351508413458" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEEZ4bhEBoUUSxEsdI5lLqBKcV1_Z9J-7taV2aW_3PqOCZaKnKDuSoBCZVo-V9OcKktVc37XcdTjDq37QmfQdEXzNJKjBdyl5Jhny4qPVYHgiaihJGAIwisVavbZkxdkOh7uojy4yBxL4/s1600/IMG_0405.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEEZ4bhEBoUUSxEsdI5lLqBKcV1_Z9J-7taV2aW_3PqOCZaKnKDuSoBCZVo-V9OcKktVc37XcdTjDq37QmfQdEXzNJKjBdyl5Jhny4qPVYHgiaihJGAIwisVavbZkxdkOh7uojy4yBxL4/s400/IMG_0405.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578870192821452066" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRehAxUqKf8hyiKx37JasX2hHqOn0QQp7SDBY-822ubKhe1m-Cuz5oKO2jIcdUNJotHJhLSFZZQsrYt3kOu9B0iJipQDsoyG89FuAJRIbnIgrS1bBqf9sHR7B3RASp2G5b7spqozgSJ0o/s1600/IMG_0406.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRehAxUqKf8hyiKx37JasX2hHqOn0QQp7SDBY-822ubKhe1m-Cuz5oKO2jIcdUNJotHJhLSFZZQsrYt3kOu9B0iJipQDsoyG89FuAJRIbnIgrS1bBqf9sHR7B3RASp2G5b7spqozgSJ0o/s400/IMG_0406.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578870917192974226" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZiYQQlI0VuNMjbXzY33ECUG4T95mLncYxD4cy6ApOiJuoXeeIxslIcTosne2_KoB6hsbnVWf0OUlSNaFJMKIa8ZluPEqSiy6tGIyGad7SjkQZb9jTg1XqJqogZPgT73AVdmnJvOCAWow/s1600/IMG_0407.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZiYQQlI0VuNMjbXzY33ECUG4T95mLncYxD4cy6ApOiJuoXeeIxslIcTosne2_KoB6hsbnVWf0OUlSNaFJMKIa8ZluPEqSiy6tGIyGad7SjkQZb9jTg1XqJqogZPgT73AVdmnJvOCAWow/s400/IMG_0407.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578871692534357522" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUzf6aoNoVJZCUF0jn3BlS71S-tzg-U9M8JwgjozmR88IFUfOF-ISCJks4OonGYsXJ6D7YEFZ1Nure8Qp6tKQX4Hl7v_LJLKVD4brnB_vC3SfRnQojI5PuSXHgrgowK_ePI1GZyHyfazw/s1600/IMG_0408.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUzf6aoNoVJZCUF0jn3BlS71S-tzg-U9M8JwgjozmR88IFUfOF-ISCJks4OonGYsXJ6D7YEFZ1Nure8Qp6tKQX4Hl7v_LJLKVD4brnB_vC3SfRnQojI5PuSXHgrgowK_ePI1GZyHyfazw/s400/IMG_0408.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578873075554393202" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJfvWDMOvcZ8gzft6Gjn2XU7J0klAqpFgegxziGyRVvbFZu1-w_gCzwSH3S2UrCMCe1agFg3kfIsKvWZLWKVL_hJYWo7qKb6GWRQvj7aSQHG3nAXp8BSLYcrebL0g8aH0EmN4ZtBuvzw8/s1600/IMG_0409.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJfvWDMOvcZ8gzft6Gjn2XU7J0klAqpFgegxziGyRVvbFZu1-w_gCzwSH3S2UrCMCe1agFg3kfIsKvWZLWKVL_hJYWo7qKb6GWRQvj7aSQHG3nAXp8BSLYcrebL0g8aH0EmN4ZtBuvzw8/s400/IMG_0409.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578873837280640450" /></a><br />Over the next couple of days or weeks these crooks will be fully carved up into lovely spoons.Rob. Did it in a lovely cream and red to match my room and then gave it a little varnish to keep it in good nick. The work I’ve put into it makes it look unique and a little quirky but most importantly it makes my shelf as is can remember putting in all the notches and diamonds, all the paint, all the mistakes. Because of all of these points it just feels much nicer in my bedroom and a joy to use.<br /><br />And its ready just in time as this morning I had a lovely and exciting package waiting for me from America! Finally found a copy of it at a decent price and in a very good condition as well. For those who don't know who Wille Sundqvist is, he is one swedens best crafts people, he was also one of swedens provincial handcraft consultants, and his carved works are an inspiration to hundreds of craftspeople. Some of the information from his this book will hopefully better my understanding of carving so my spoons will hopefully get better. Only time will tell……….Rob. Being a historical re-enactor one does tend to acquire a lot of books on history, armour, politics, household accounts, archaeology, and so on. However due to the small book space I currently have many of these books were living life on the floor, not the best place for a book.<br /><br />As a woodworker I saw it as an opportunity to have a little fun and customise a piece of furniture for my room. I accompanied my parent to B&Q and bought some pine boarding. I know its not green wood as this blog focuses on but it was a little fun project for myself.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVysRqtAVNgCcED3xZ94hKPeRS6ZlB8kdXgY1rPMs_blVd6UA5w3q21HhDM3EvdkoCvWoCH5ZuOfut5oH4_FpnYovSlOcSZ-LIMe_zbyNmuxgwRkr3ekTSmQRf7o9ajBR6krPA_PBdX1w/s1600/IMG_0237.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVysRqtAVNgCcED3xZ94hKPeRS6ZlB8kdXgY1rPMs_blVd6UA5w3q21HhDM3EvdkoCvWoCH5ZuOfut5oH4_FpnYovSlOcSZ-LIMe_zbyNmuxgwRkr3ekTSmQRf7o9ajBR6krPA_PBdX1w/s320/IMG_0237.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571627317554779554" /></a><br />To achieve the design I had in mind I marked up the board every 2 centimetres.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghhxCHmqwRO2Uw0a6QEdCBNqheeoJxBMoc9L1b8T6jKgLbzdTBGCyMPuaomtqVPsKnvWIZ1ed8Io8hAkYf1QNAO-MvEWS3C5aQEUk-ZvvN0WJUr-gfsctLI7R4Yj6-SscJoTszd5NsW6U/s1600/IMG_0239.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghhxCHmqwRO2Uw0a6QEdCBNqheeoJxBMoc9L1b8T6jKgLbzdTBGCyMPuaomtqVPsKnvWIZ1ed8Io8hAkYf1QNAO-MvEWS3C5aQEUk-ZvvN0WJUr-gfsctLI7R4Yj6-SscJoTszd5NsW6U/s320/IMG_0239.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571626683125548594" /></a><br />Then next cut into the marks.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQdYXhkdmkULIWNIXbf1J2w2oDM7XLpxcVtISR1ARFCvCnThOJ69yIqSM8CaoZZNk-y75G_yUmUvz6zuxUw0VoB6BKLJ0BmGllPUo6i8orwqRNHTufNBgz940NPYxZTdHhJJZ8J9l57a8/s1600/IMG_0240.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQdYXhkdmkULIWNIXbf1J2w2oDM7XLpxcVtISR1ARFCvCnThOJ69yIqSM8CaoZZNk-y75G_yUmUvz6zuxUw0VoB6BKLJ0BmGllPUo6i8orwqRNHTufNBgz940NPYxZTdHhJJZ8J9l57a8/s320/IMG_0240.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571627754392371570" /></a><br />And then simply removed some of the wood on either side of the marks to create a diamond shape. Thought I’d have a practice by taking some photos of some of my recent spoons. Had ago playing with some lighting effects on a few of them with the lamp on my desk, Something cheap and cheerful which gave some good effects.<br /><br />These spoons are from a small log of birch which I got down from Peterborough. Carved them up over a couple of weeks, roughing them out then leaving them to dry out over 2-3 weeks and finishing them later. The reason I did them over three weeks is partly due to other commitments.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrU8LmzP_PPitnocWcxhytrQacTk9YBMVB6Pb0tmate6gn_GFf5oF_121YELpsI9jGKzrYyyXQOw8eoKxeO1A7F5OCxlkHnO-0T1-KMlexLraRWUt3GVzMdpg8c_yYrjqXjnwPTQeY5OQ/s1600/IMG_0233.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrU8LmzP_PPitnocWcxhytrQacTk9YBMVB6Pb0tmate6gn_GFf5oF_121YELpsI9jGKzrYyyXQOw8eoKxeO1A7F5OCxlkHnO-0T1-KMlexLraRWUt3GVzMdpg8c_yYrjqXjnwPTQeY5OQ/s320/IMG_0233.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570699004154705746" /></a>3 easting spoons and a server.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSv-EEkIv2kTS7vYU0EoEhEbg6EEgtYgbHMtCLeu_mQBnvsQ8f0NuUDgFfKjRckAn-n2xhaX3X5aIRiyTwmp-vyfFhfoDvoPKPxVFhmBPYNyKKuy_pYd4ynqAF9CmzojilpViGsYc0Pvo/s1600/IMG_0236.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSv-EEkIv2kTS7vYU0EoEhEbg6EEgtYgbHMtCLeu_mQBnvsQ8f0NuUDgFfKjRckAn-n2xhaX3X5aIRiyTwmp-vyfFhfoDvoPKPxVFhmBPYNyKKuy_pYd4ynqAF9CmzojilpViGsYc0Pvo/s320/IMG_0236.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570700216017233474" /></a>A close up of the tooled finish. getting better.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjZ4QrTYAtjTkOJQWORMrccHdQjdCqVtXM6JUlNfFUuZUvNa3CMPJ9QYt48pSW1TYLc1J5O2BlApAxZEyCikzCvQsjx2Ca8RQtXMmH03xn4kMjZi15SP6gxY4xeSVdM9HnGMol8NgU9MY/s1600/IMG_0234.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjZ4QrTYAtjTkOJQWORMrccHdQjdCqVtXM6JUlNfFUuZUvNa3CMPJ9QYt48pSW1TYLc1J5O2BlApAxZEyCikzCvQsjx2Ca8RQtXMmH03xn4kMjZi15SP6gxY4xeSVdM9HnGMol8NgU9MY/s320/IMG_0234.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570701125033131682" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2whFOov_INX4IDsINK9FNu_B39Y6HYCFavGONVzzHIbEkncaDHLbUR011RF7KBvo5lIejU_N_nMz7LM6xKDSqJPcRYhRB2zQoLwLSM676mxtq-uvqprZXiJmt7YUfWhb0L4fxIOyJC3E/s1600/IMG_0235.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2whFOov_INX4IDsINK9FNu_B39Y6HYCFavGONVzzHIbEkncaDHLbUR011RF7KBvo5lIejU_N_nMz7LM6xKDSqJPcRYhRB2zQoLwLSM676mxtq-uvqprZXiJmt7YUfWhb0L4fxIOyJC3E/s320/IMG_0235.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570701560928278722" /></a><br />Had a go at soaking the spoons in linseed oil to get the transparent affect. its an interesting effect thought the spoons do leak linseed oil everywhere. possibly they need more time to cure. Also with the serving spoon I had ago at carving a design on the handle to add a little bit of pisaz.<br /><br />These being the first spoons of 2011, am looking forward to carving more spoons.Rob.
